Imphal: In a deeply distressing incident that has sparked widespread protests, the body of a physically challenged man who had been missing for almost a week was found in Manipur's Imphal West district on Tuesday morning. The discovery has led to significant public unrest, as confirmed by local police. Following investigations, authorities arrested nine individuals, including six members of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol, in connection with the case.

The victim, Chesam Abdul Kadir, hailing from Paobitek Mayai Leikai, was reported missing on June 11 after facing accusations of theft and alleged mob assault. His disappearance prompted a tense search, eventually leading police to his body, which was found buried at Samurou Naorem. Upon further inquiry, it was corroborated that Kadir had been killed and then concealed in a clandestine grave.

The body was respectfully exhumed in the presence of an executive magistrate, a forensic team, and Kadir's family members, acknowledging the sensitive nature of the case. Police stated, "A criminal case has been registered, and a comprehensive investigation will be carried out." They also appealed to the public via a post on X, requesting their cooperation in maintaining peace and supporting the ongoing investigative efforts.

However, the retrieval of the body ignited protests within the Paobitek community. Angered locals took to the streets, burning tyres and causing disruption. Security forces resorted to deploying tear gas shells to control the situation, while protestors retaliated by throwing stones.

Those arrested from the Arambai Tenggol outfit have been identified as Longjam Henson (24), Thounaojam Ashok Singh (20), and Huidrom Shyamsunder Singh (30), along with three others. This incident underlines the fragile peace in the region and the urgent need for a transparent inquiry to ensure justice and restore calm.
