Kolkata Braces for Heavy Rains Due to Bay of Bengal Cyclone

Kolkata faces heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rains are expected in several districts, causing traffic disruptions.

Kolkata Braces for Heavy Rains Due to Bay of Bengal Cyclone

Kolkata, May 27 (PTI) – South Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced rainfall for the second consecutive day on Tuesday due to the impact of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, according to an IMD official.

In the past 24 hours, Kolkata recorded 35.1 mm of rainfall till 11:30 am. The official reported that a low-pressure area had formed over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast and is expected to move slowly northwards, becoming more pronounced over the next 48 hours.

As a result, "heavy to very heavy rainfall" is anticipated in isolated parts of several districts in West Bengal over the next 24 hours, as per an IMD bulletin.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is likely to occur at isolated places in South 24 Parganas district of South Bengal," said the spokesperson. Similar rainfall levels of 7-20 cm are also forecast for one or two locations in the districts of Kalimpong, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar in the next 24 hours.

Aside from the heavy rainfall in isolated areas, light to moderate showers with lightning and wind speeds of 30-40 km per hour are predicted for Kolkata, Howrah, North-South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Paschim Bardhaman, Murshidabad, Purba Medinipur, Bankura, and Jhargram districts in the afternoon. The adverse weather conditions led to intermittent showers causing vehicular traffic disruption and traffic jams during peak office hours.

Although the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the region, the rains in West Bengal are categorized as pre-monsoon showers. The spokesperson added that the system's influence is leading to increased moisture content in the winds, resulting in rainfall.
