Gyanvapi case: Varanasi court rules out carbon dating

In a crucial verdict in the Gyanvapi case, a Varanasi court ruled out scientic investigation of the purported Shivling found inside the mosque complex

The verdict was delivered during the hearing of a plea filed by 4 Hindu women for scientific investigation (carbon dating) of the purported ‘Shivling’ in September 2022 to determine the age of the structure.

The ‘Shivling’ was found inside the Gyanvapi mosque complex early this year during a video survey carried out on the orders of a lower court.

The women petitioners had earlier in the year filed a plea to pray yearlong at the shrine are being heard in the district judge’s court.

One of the five petitioners , though, had objected to the carbon dating plea saying that any testing may harm the 'Shivling'.

Last month on September 29, 2022 Muslim side had objected to the scientific investigation plea, saying that the case by the Hindu women was about worshipping at a shrine inside the mosque and had nothing to do with its structure. The mosque committee said the object being called a 'Shivling' was actually a "fountain".
