Gurugram: 5 people cough blood after eating mouth freshener at restaurant

A bizarre incident unfolded at a Gurugram restaurant on March 2 as five people coughed up blood after eating mouth freshener.

A video of the incident shot by one the customers shows the group in pain as one them threw up.

Ankit Kumar said that his wife and friends felt an extreme burning sensation after eating the mouth freshener, which he alleged was laced with dry ice. Five people have been admitted to the hospital after the incident.

“Everyone here is vomiting. They have cuts on their tongues. Their mouths are burning. Don't know what type of acid they have given us,” the man said after eating at the Laforestta Cafe in Gurugram.

“I showed the packet of mouth freshener to a doctor, who said it was dry ice. According to the doctor, it is an acid which can lead to death,” his police complaint said, as per NDTV.

Out of the five people hospitalised after the incident, two are said to be in critical condition.

Dry ice is a cryogenic material and can be fatal if not handled properly. As per the US CDC, it can cause severe frostbite upon contact with skin for more than a few seconds. It also releases a large amount of carbon dioxide when it sublimates.
