Guru Nanak Jayanti: devotees light candles at Golden Temple, Bangla Sahib to celebrate Gurpurab

Guru Nanak Jayanti which commemorates the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak is being celebrated this year on November 27. According to Sikh literature, Guru Nanak's birth anniversary is observed on the full moon day of the Indian lunar month of Kartik.

This year, the Kartik Purnima is on November 27 and that marks the 554th birth anniversary of the Guru Nanak Dev. Devotees celebrate Gurpurab by lighting candles and reciting Ardas.

There are visuals doing rounds that show Amritsar's Golden Temple, Himachal Pradesh's Gurudwara Guru Gobind Singh and Delhi's Bangla Sahib illuminated in colourful lights to mark the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Devotees were seen offering prayers at Gurudwaras across the country.

It is also worth noting that as per some ancient scriptures, it is believed that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on April 15, 149 at Talwandi, now popular as Nankana Sahib which is situated in Pakistan. However, the Sikh community believes that he was born on Kartik month of Purnima tithi.
