Global Hunger Index calculated by calling and asking people if they are hungry: Smriti Irani

The Opposition on October 20 criticised Union Minister Smriti Irani for mocking India's ranking in the Global Hunger Index.

This after Irani claimed that certain indices, including the Global Hunger Index, don't accurately represent India's progress at an event organised by FICCI in Hyderabad.

She mentioned that the index is based on phone surveys of 3,000 people out of India's population of 140 crore and she questioned its accuracy.

Reacting to the minister's statement, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate lashed out at her on X saying the comment made by the minister was 'insensitive and ignorant'.

According to the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India ranked 111 out of 125 countries with a score of 28.7, while Pakistan ranked 102 on the index, with a score of 26.6.
