Ghazipur: 5 dead after wedding bus catches fire

A bus carrying 30 passengers to a wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur caught fire after it came in contact with a live wire. At least 5 people died after the flames engulfed the vehicle and 5 others were taken to the hospital. While the fire has been doused, videos from the spot show the bus has been completely charred. The UP government has announced compensation for the victims.

“A bus was coming here from Mau district for a wedding which came in contact with a high tension wire and later caught fire,” a senior Ghazipur police officer said. “Five people died on the spot and 5 others were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment,” he added.

The accident took place when members of a marriage party from Mau were on its way to Mahahar temple in the Mardah police station area, SHO Dharmendra Kumar Pandey told PTI over phone.

The bus came in contact with a high-tension electric line and caught fire, Pandey said, adding relief and rescue operations are going on.

District Information Officer Rakesh Kumar said that the district magistrate and other senior officials have reached the spot.

"The loss of lives in an accident in Ghazipur district is extremely sad and heart wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved families. I pray to God to grant peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured," UP CM Yogi Adityanath said.
