Gauhati University's Finishing School: Bridging Education and Employment

Guwahati, Jul 1 (PTI): Gauhati University recently held a 30-hour career readiness and personality development program as part of its Finishing School initiative, designed to equip final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students with vital skills.

During the event, Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasized the significance of communication in today’s world, describing how effective use of language can transform perceptions and shape destinies.

He urged students to seriously hone their communication skills, which he termed as the currency of influence and leadership in today's society.

Mahanta highlighted that the program was specifically designed for outgoing students in light of concerns that many graduates, despite strong academic backgrounds, still struggle with basic workplace communication and professional readiness.

The program reflects Gauhati University’s commitment to bridging the gap between campus life and careers, aiming to nurture graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also professionally prepared.

Registrar Utpal Sarma encouraged students to embrace change positively, work diligently, and develop inner discipline.

He emphasized the importance of self-improvement and consistent effort, stating that soft skills are as crucial as academic prowess for achieving long-term success.

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to resource persons, faculty members, especially those on the Soft Skill Committee, and selected nodal officers who played key roles in curriculum design, logistics, and session delivery.

Participating students also received certificates upon successful completion of the program, which spanned eight days and concluded on Monday.

Coordinated by the Soft Skill Committee, the program involved students from 15 academic departments and affiliated colleges.

Expert trainers and professionals delivered sessions on essential workplace competencies, including self-discovery, effective communication, English for employability, resume building, digital etiquette, group discussions, and interview preparation, according to a university release issued on Tuesday.
