Sub Lt Aastha Poonia: First Woman in Indian Navy's Fighter Stream

New Delhi, July 4 (PTI) — Sub Lt Aastha Poonia has made history by becoming the first woman to be inducted into the fighter stream of naval aviation in the Indian Navy, officials announced on Friday. This milestone marks a significant step forward for women fighter pilots in the force.

Paving her way through a rigorous selection, Sub Lt Poonia is now set to undergo further training to qualify as a fighter pilot.

The Indian Navy recently celebrated the graduation of the Second Basic Hawk Conversion Course at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam. On July 3, both Lt Atul Kumar Dhull and Sub Lt Poonia were awarded the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' by Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air), during the winging ceremony, according to a statement from the defence ministry.

Sub Lt Aastha Poonia's induction into the fighter stream is not just a personal achievement but a groundbreaking development, symbolizing the breaking of barriers and heralding a new era for women fighter pilots in the Navy, the statement highlighted.

The Indian Navy has been proactive in integrating women into its ranks, having previously inducted female officers as pilots and naval air operations officers in Maritime Reconnaissance (MR) aircraft and helicopters.

Sub Lt Poonia’s transition into the fighter stream underscores the Navy’s dedication to gender inclusivity in naval aviation, fostering an environment that champions equality and opportunity.
