Eight Arrested for Impersonating Police in Fake Raid on Laxmi Nagar Business

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) Eight individuals have been apprehended for allegedly impersonating Delhi Police officials to target a Laxmi Nagar insurance office owner, law enforcement authorities reported on Tuesday. These suspects are accused of staging a fake police operation where they assaulted, intimidated, and extorted valuables from the victim under a false insurance fraud investigation.

The accused include Hunny Kumar (31), a former employee of the victim and a telecommunications worker; Sunny Sharma (28), who drives a cab; and Ankit Jain (32), with prior criminal records. Others involved are Vikram Singh (35), a bakery supervisor; Rahul Gupta (27), a data analyst; Rahul Yadav (27), a gym trainer; and property dealers Anil Kant (33) and Jeetpal (42).

On June 26, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania, four men claiming to be from the Delhi Police’s Special Staff stormed into Salman’s office—an insurance business in Laxmi Nagar. They confiscated his mobile and laptop and forcibly led him away in a vehicle.

Salman, 31, was reportedly beaten and forced to transfer Rs 70,000 to a designated bank account, while being conned out of an additional Rs 80,000 in cash under threats of being framed in a fictitious case.

The plot was uncovered when a case was filed on June 28 at Laxmi Nagar Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS. A swift investigation resulted in five suspects being apprehended on the night of the complaint on Noida Link Road, using the same vehicle involved in the crime. Three more suspects were detained from various Delhi locations.

In-depth questioning revealed that the operation was masterminded by Hunny Kumar, who had left his job with Salman two weeks prior, exploiting inside knowledge to assist Sunny Sharma in concocting the counterfeit raid. Sharma also had a previous arrest in a cyber fraud case from Ghaziabad; Ankit Jain was named with past criminal entanglements.

The accused confessed that Hunny Kumar's personal vendetta spurred his betrayal, supplying critical details for executing the hoax. The group's impersonation of policemen was a tactic to bolster the façade and aid their extortion scheme, investigators disclosed.
