Explained: Gurugram bans 11 dog breeds. Here's what the new order says

The forum issued directions to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) over dog ownership, mandatory metal chains and only one dog per family

Following a complaint by a househelp who was severly wounded by a dog in August this year, Gurugram's district consumer disputes redressal forum has banned at least 11 foreign dog breeds in the city.

Effective from November 15, the order bars 11 breeds namely - American Pit-bull Terries, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiller, Neapolitan Mastiff, Boerboel, Presa Canario, Wolf Dog, Bandog, American Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro and Cane Corso.

Gurugram's civic body has been ordered to cancel registrations of all such dogs and take them into their custody

After the order passed by the forum, it will now be mandatory for all pet dogs to wear a collar with a metal chain and token. A family will be allowed to keep only one dog.

It further directed the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram to mandatorily register dogs within a month and issue licenses at Rs 12,000 per year. The licences have to be renewed every year.

For violators, the forum said, a fine would range from a minimum of Rs 20,000 to Rs 2 lakhs and their dog will be taken into custody by the corporation.

Meanwhile, Gurguram civic body said it's analysing the forum's directions.
