Palghar, Sep 8 (PTI): An 81-year-old man allegedly murdered his 74-year-old wife by stabbing her, and subsequently attempted suicide by slitting his wrist, in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police reported on Monday.

The couple, who lived in the Vasai area, had both been dealing with long-term health issues, which might have led the man to commit the act, according to an official from the police control room. Details about their specific health problems were not disclosed.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening at their residence. The man reportedly used a kitchen knife to stab his wife, before injuring himself in a suicide attempt.

Their son returned home to find the entrance locked from the inside. After forcing the door open, he discovered his mother in a pool of blood and his father severely injured.

The woman was pronounced dead, while the man was transported to a hospital where he is fighting for his life, as per the police official. The authorities have sent the woman's body for a postmortem examination.

The police have registered a case under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder against the man.
