EJ quixplained: how SC's verdict on Article 370 will impact BJP's chances in 2024

The Supreme Court's seal of validity on the Centre's move to remove provisions of Article 370 that gave Jammu and Kashmir its special status means that the BJP has now fulfilled two out of its three core promises.

BJP's parent organisation the Jan Sangh was founded on three core agendas - building the Ram temple, full integration of J&K into India by removing its special status and implementins Uniform Civil Code.

Coalition compulsions prevented the BJP from outrightly taking steps to fulfill these agendas but after it received a thumping majority for a second consecutive time in 2019, they moved swiftly.

First the BJP govt stripped J&K of its special status in August 2019, then in November same year the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Ram Mandir movement. On December 11 this year, the move to water down Article 370 received the top court's approval. In January next year, the new Ram Mandir in Ayodhya will be inaugurated.

BJP's third agenda, Uniform Civil Code, is now expected to take centrestage in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
