Sikkim MP Advocates for Pakyong Airport Flight Resumption

Gangtok, Aug 13 (PTI): Sikkim's sole Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, announced on Wednesday that a high-level meeting was convened in New Delhi to deliberate on the resumption of flight services at Pakyong airport in the northeastern state.

The meeting took place at Udaan Bhawan on Tuesday, chaired by Murlidhar Mohol, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation.

Flight operations to and from Pakyong airport have been suspended since June 2024.

During the meeting, Balasaheb Pote, the director of Pakyong airport, presented an overview of the current operational status, recent developments, and plans for infrastructure enhancement to ensure sustainable flight operations.

According to a statement from Subba's office, the MP emphasized Pakyong airport's strategic role in bolstering connectivity between Sikkim and other states.

Subba pointed out the negative impact of the halted flight services on the populace, tourism, and economic activities in this Himalayan state.

The meeting addressed operational and technical challenges, including weather-related issues, the need for suitable aircraft, and more reliable flight scheduling.

Mohol assured the MP of the ministry’s full support in collaborating with airlines and stakeholders to expedite the restoration of flight services.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and representatives from SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Alliance Air.

Representatives from private airlines expressed their willingness to work with relevant authorities to offer long-term, dependable services.

Subba expressed his gratitude to the central minister and airline representatives for their commitment to reestablishing the essential air link to Sikkim.
