Kolkata, Oct 6 (PTI) The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) released 55,000 cusecs of water from the Maithon and Panchet reservoirs in Jharkhand on Monday, raising fresh flood concerns in the southern districts of West Bengal. Officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent a flood-like scenario, as rivers in the region have swollen from heavy rainfall in recent weeks.

On September 3, the DVC released 70,000 cusecs of water, which drew sharp criticism from the West Bengal government. The state government accused the DVC of failing to coordinate properly, escalating flood risks with several rivers flowing above the danger level.

The current flood threat in the southern districts comes as north Bengal continues to deal with the impact of incessant rains. Authorities report that landslides triggered by the rainfall have resulted in 24 deaths in Darjeeling district.
