Delhi University Introduces Exit Option in FYUP Aligning with NEP 2020

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) - Delhi University has announced a significant update, allowing students enrolled in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) the option to exit with a degree after completing three years. This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The official notification, issued Thursday, clarifies that students who have finished six semesters, equating to three years, under the UG Curriculum Framework 2022 can exit with a three-year degree. This would be a general degree for multi-core disciplines or an Honours degree for single-core disciplines.

"Students wishing to avail themselves of this option can access the university’s student portal at https:lc.uod.ac.in and submit their intent through the specified online procedure," the notice specifies.

The notification also advises students to thoroughly evaluate their academic and career objectives and seek counsel from teachers and mentors before choosing the early exit option.

This development comes as Delhi University gears up to introduce the fourth and final year of the FYUP this August. The FYUP, introduced under NEP 2020, extends undergraduate courses from the traditional three to four years and provides multiple entry and exit points, allowing the acquisition of a certificate, diploma, or degree after completing one, two, or three years, respectively. The fourth year is particularly designed as a platform for research specialization.

While the revamped structure aims to enhance flexibility and academic engagement, concerns have been raised regarding existing infrastructure challenges, incomplete curricula, and the readiness of colleges and faculty.

In a May interview with PTI, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh acknowledged these challenges but emphasized, "Facilities will be created. This is the first time the focus is on research, entrepreneurship, and skill... this fourth year will be a game changer." As the transition progresses, the newly introduced exit option is seen as a means to provide students with greater autonomy and clarity as they navigate their academic journeys within the evolving higher education framework.
