Delhi Police to Intensify Crackdown on Dangerous Chinese Manjha

New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) — A drive to target the sale and stockpiling of Chinese manjha in the national capital will soon be launched by Delhi Police, according to an officer.

Chinese manjha, a perilous kite-flying string coated with glass, metal, or other sharp materials, has been prohibited in Delhi since 2017.

On June 27, tragedy struck when a 22-year-old man lost his life after his throat was slashed by Chinese manjha near Bara Hindu Rao Hospital in north Delhi.

The victim, Yash Goswami from Karawal Nagar, was on his way home when he encountered the deadly string, resulting in a severe neck injury.

"Instructions have been issued to senior police officials across the city's 15 districts to raid those selling and storing Chinese manjha," a senior police officer commented.

The officer added that enforcement teams would be visiting various markets to confiscate the banned manjha and apprehend those involved in its distribution.

Last year, Delhi Police successfully seized over 20,000 rolls of this hazardous material during operations across 15 districts.

Numerous incidents have been recorded where individuals have been gravely injured or have died due to Chinese manjha in Delhi.

Among them is a tragic case from July 2023, in which a seven-year-old girl in Paschim Vihar, west Delhi, died because of it. In August of the previous year, a 47-year-old Delhi Police ASI and a businessman were also injured in similar circumstances.
