Notorious Robber Lalit Apprehended in Delhi Gunfight

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) A 32-year-old notorious robber, Lalit alias Nepali, was apprehended following a brief gunfight with the police near Sarai Kale Khan, Delhi, according to officials on Wednesday. He was wanted in multiple cases, including armed robberies and illegal arms possession. Lalit received a bullet injury in his left leg during the confrontation, while Assistant Commissioner of Police (Lajpat Nagar) Mihir Sakaria was saved by his bulletproof jacket.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Aishwarya Sharma highlighted that Lalit has a substantial criminal record with over 18 cases involving armed robberies, snatching, and illegal arms possession. He was also declared a proclaimed offender in two robbery cases registered at Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station.

A joint operation was initiated by the Southeast district's special task force and personnel from Sunlight Colony police station after they received intelligence about Lalit’s presence in the Sarai Kale Khan area. At around 1:55 am on Tuesday night, police intercepted Lalit on a stolen motorcycle. When asked to surrender, he fired at the officers. ACP Sakaria was struck in the chest, but his bulletproof jacket provided protection. In return fire, Lalit was wounded in the leg.

Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol with four live cartridges from Lalit and discovered the motorcycle was stolen from Sector 24 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Four empty shells were found at the scene — two fired by Lalit, two by the police. A case has been registered at Sunlight Colony police station under relevant sections. During questioning, Lalit confessed he was attempting to move his hideout after learning of being declared a proclaimed offender.

Lalit was previously convicted and sentenced to 14 years in jail for a 2016 armed robbery case registered at Saket police station. He had been involved in criminal activities across Delhi and NCR and had encountered legal action for robbery, snatching, arms act violations, and theft in places like Vasant Vihar, Hauz Khas, and Noida. Further interrogation is ongoing.
