Lt Governor Saxena Approves Dissolution of Delhi Medical Council

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI) — Lt Governor V K Saxena has greenlighted a proposal from the Delhi government to dissolve the Delhi Medical Council due to alleged irregularities, as reported by officials on Tuesday. He has also instructed the Health Department to begin the reconstitution of the DMC and to complete the entire process within a two-month timeframe. The Delhi Medical Council, an autonomous statutory entity, governs the practice of medicine in the national capital, ensuring that private doctors maintain ethical standards to protect patient safety. Officials from the Health Department proposed gaining control over the body under Section 29 of the DMC Act, 1997 and recommended its dissolution for a set period. In a note to the department, Saxena highlighted that the DMC had independently extended the retirement age of the Registrar from 60 to 65 without government consent and further extended his term by an additional year starting December 1, 2024. The DMC, responding to a showcause notice issued in February, disclosed that the concerned official resigned immediately but did not provide additional information, according to the LG's note. Saxena pointed out that the DMC had "exceeded" and "abused" its regulatory authority, agreeing with the Health Department's proposal for its dissolution. Additionally, Saxena directed that two ex-officio members remain on the Council and that the DGHS be assigned the responsibilities of Registrar during the interim period.
