      The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed a judgement, which directed the AAP government to take a decision on CM Arvind Kejriwal’s rent payment promise made during the lockdown2020. The AAP government had said the state would pay rent for tenants unable to do so.

      The high court bench headed by Chief Justice DN Patel criticised the government for making the statement without having any such intention
      The court had earlier ruled that an assurance given by a Chief Minister “clearly amounts to an enforceable promise” and the implementation must be considered by the state.

      The government had challenged the verdict and it came for hearing before the division bench on Monday.

      It was observed that good governance requires that promises made to citizens by those who govern are not broken without valid reasons.

      However, the government in its appeal said that Kejriwal's statement has been erroneously picked out of context and misinterpreted to constitute a “sweeping and unconditional promise’.
