Delhi Court Allows Closure of JNU Student's Disappearance Case

New Delhi, Jun 30 (PTI) - On Monday, a Delhi court granted permission to the CBI to close the investigation into the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year JNU student who vanished on October 15, 2016. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari accepted the agency's closure report, while also granting the possibility of reopening the case should any new evidence emerge. The CBI had concluded its investigation into the case back in October 2018, as its efforts to locate Ahmed led to no success. The closure report was submitted to the court after obtaining the necessary clearance from the Delhi High Court. Najeeb Ahmed disappeared from JNU's Mahi-Mandvi Hostel on October 15, 2016, following an altercation with students who were allegedly linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad the previous evening. According to the counsel for Nafees, it was argued that the matter was a "political case," suggesting that the CBI was pressured by influential forces. Initially, the case was handled by the Delhi Police, but it was subsequently handed over to the CBI for further investigation.
