Delhi's CEO Issues Notices to 27 Inactive Political Parties

Delhi's CEO Issues Notices to 27 Inactive Political Parties

New Delhi, July 4 (PTI) — The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi has issued show-cause notices to 27 inactive political parties, as directed by the Election Commission. These parties have been asked to explain their continued registration status, officials announced on Friday.

These notices target political parties that have not put forward any candidates in Lok Sabha, state assembly, or by-elections over the past six years, commencing from 2019. Among the Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs) are groups such as the All India Jan Congress Party, Akhil Bharatiya Samjawadi Congress, and the All India Women United Party.

While these parties are officially registered under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, their lack of electoral activity in recent times indicates non-functionality as per the Act's stipulations, according to an official statement.

The Election Commission has thus initiated the process to delist these parties from the registered political parties list under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The CEO has asked these parties to respond within a given timeframe, explaining why their names should not be removed. If no response is received, it will be presumed the party has nothing further to add, and the Commission will proceed with appropriate action without further notification.

This process aims to provide these parties with an opportunity to present their case before any final decision is made, as emphasized by the statement.

Parties must submit their responses in writing, signed by either the party president or general secretary under oath, including any supporting documents they wish to use. All documentation should reach the Chief Electoral Officer's office by July 18.

The hearing for the concerned parties is scheduled for July 15, where the party's president, general secretary, or leader must appear in person. In the absence of a reply by the deadline, it will be taken as if the party has no response, and the Commission will issue orders accordingly, with no further notice.
