Covid cases dip, Delhi govt says can end weekend curfew, allow all shops to open

With Covid-19 cases on a decline, the Delhi government has recommended relaxations in restrictions in the Capital.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Lt Governor Anil Baijal asking for ending weekend curfew in the national capital.

The chief minister has also asked to remove the odd-even system in the markets and allow all shops to open. The AAP government has also asked for private offices to be allowed to operate at 50% capacity.

Delhi had recorded over 12,000 Covid-19 cases and 43 deaths due to the virus on Thursday. The number of single-day Covid deaths was the highest in Delhi since June 10, 2021. As many as 396 people have succumbed to Covid-19 in the national capital so far in January.

The city saw a dip in positivity rate to 21.48% on Thursday.

The Delhi government has said that the city seems to have passed the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 but cautioned that it is not out of the danger zone yet.

The Delhi government had clamped multiple curbs last months as Covid-19 cases began to shoot fuelled by the more infectious Omicron variant.
