Bravery Beyond Grief: Widow Encourages Son to Join Army

Bravery Beyond Grief: Widow Encourages Son to Join Army

Lamochen (Kargil), Jul 25 (PTI) Vinod Kanwar, widowed at the age of 20 during the 1999 Kargil war, faced immense grief over the loss of her husband. Yet, this sorrow did not deter her from encouraging her only son to join the Indian Army.

"We have to think about the nation first and protect it. We cannot be selfish," Kanwar, now 46, remarked at a ceremony honoring the families of martyrs, part of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations held on Friday. Her son, Tejvir Singh Rathore, had just turned six months old when his father, Naik Bhanwar Singh Rathore, sacrificed his life on July 10, 1999, during the successful operation to recapture Point 4700.

Currently, Tejvir is training at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, as Kanwar proudly shared. "My son Tejvir Singh Rathore was only six months old when his father became a martyr. He did not even have the chance to see his father," she said.

When asked if she had any reservations about her son joining the Army, Kanwar revealed that she never doubted her choice. "Tejvir will be the third generation from my family to join the Army. My father was a soldier, my husband sacrificed his life for the nation, and my son will also serve," she explained.

Kanwar acknowledged the profound pain caused by her husband's death but expressed immense pride in his sacrifice for the nation. Naik Bhanwar Singh Rathore, born on September 3, 1977, in Hirasani village, Nagaur district, Rajasthan, joined the Army in December 1994 and served in the 7 Para battalion of the Parachute Regiment, renowned for its elite para commandos.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed annually on July 26. On this historic day in 1999, the Indian Army declared the successful conclusion of 'Operation Vijay,' marking victory after an arduous, nearly three-month-long battle in the icy elevations of Kargil. This included high-altitude engagements at locations such as Tololing and Tiger Hill.
