Political bickering marred celebrations of Constitution Day on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered India’s first president Rajendra Prasad and the chairperson of the committee for drafting the Constitution, Dr BR Ambedkar, to stress the importance of the document outlining the rights and duties of both the government and the people.

PM Modi also shared a part of BR Ambedkar's speech in the Constituent Assembly on 4th November 1948.

Meanwhile, Congress and 14 opposition parties decided to boycott the function to mark the day in the Central Hall of Parliament.

The government slammed the decision calling it an insult to the Constitution.

Constitution Day is observed every year on November 26 to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949. It came into force on January 26, 1950.

The Constitution Day was first observed in 2015 as a mark of tribute to India's first law minister BR Ambedkar.
