Congress Yet to Decide on MVA's Joint Contest for Maharashtra Local Elections

Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala announced no decision yet if MVA, including Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), will contest the state's local elections together.

Congress Yet to Decide on MVA's Joint Contest for Maharashtra Local Elections

Pune, Aug 13 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala stated that no decision has been made yet on whether the constituents of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will contest the forthcoming local body elections in the state collectively.

During a discussion about the MVA partners contesting these polls together, Chennithala mentioned on Tuesday that the Congress will engage in deliberations on the matter, acknowledging that the alliance "may or may not take place."

He further clarified that the Congress has no objections concerning the potential alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin, MNS head Raj Thackeray.

Chennithala made these remarks while addressing reporters at the sidelines of a two-day workshop conducted by the party for its workers and functionaries.

Local and civic body elections in the state, including that of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, are anticipated to take place later this year.

In the previous year, the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) had jointly contested the Lok Sabha and state assembly polls under the MVA umbrella.

When questioned about the possibility of MVA partners uniting for the local body elections, Chennithala replied, "The alliance may take place or may not take place. We have not yet taken any decision. We have our political affairs meeting planned, in which the issue of alliance will be discussed in detail."

Addressing the increased closeness between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, Chennithala indicated that the MNS is not a part of the alliance.

"We have no idea about Raj's (MNS) alliance with his cousin Uddhav Thackeray. No decision has been taken yet. I do not want to comment on a decision which has not yet been taken. It is their family affair. We have no issues if the two cousins join hands, but we will have to take a political decision on whether the alliance will take place or not," he expressed.

In response to Chennithala's comments, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA and Uddhav Thackeray's son, Aaditya Thackeray, shared his perspective, stating that whatever the people of the state desire will come to fruition.

"All the parties need to come together to save democracy in the country, because if democracy does not remain, no one will have the chance to raise their voice," he emphasized.
