Congress Urges Government Action for Missing Indians in Russia

Congress demands government action for 14 missing Indians, allegedly recruited into Russian army. Concerns raised over agents' role.

Congress Urges Government Action for Missing Indians in Russia

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) - The Congress has raised alarms over the disappearance of 14 Indian nationals who traveled to Russia seeking employment, and has called upon the Indian government to engage with Moscow to ensure their return. Punjab Congress head, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, shared these concerns during a press conference alongside two individuals from Punjab who have anxiously awaited the homecoming of their brothers, who have been untraceable in Russia for the past eighteen months.

"In December 2023, a total of 126 people left India in search of jobs. Their intended destinations were Singapore, Malaysia, and Italy, but instead, they found themselves in Moscow," Warring stated. "My friend Jagdeep informed me that his brother, among five others, paid Rs 31,40,000 to agents, yet they found themselves recruited into the Russian army instead of the promised employment," he alleged.

According to Warring, around 100 of these individuals have managed to return home. However, 14 people are still unaccounted for. "I have the details, including names and contact information, of these missing individuals," he revealed during the briefing.

The missing persons reportedly include nine individuals from Uttar Pradesh, three from Punjab, one from Maharashtra, and another from Jammu and Kashmir. "This situation reflects the state of Modi Ji's Amrit Kaal," declared the Congress MP from Punjab. He also questioned the central government, demanding to know, "Will you aid them? Have you inquired why Indian citizens were enlisted in the Russian army? Have you acted against these agents who are possibly colluding with the Russian authorities, duping citizens, and putting their lives at risk?"
