Congress Criticizes PM Modi's Foreign Tour Amid Domestic Issues

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming foreign tour, the Congress made critical remarks, highlighting what they describe as a "frequent flier PM" embarking on a five-nation "jaunt".

Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, took to X to voice allegations, suggesting the PM is evading pressing domestic issues, such as the situation in Manipur and claims made by US President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Ramesh further accused Modi of distancing himself from controversies tied to an operation along the borders where India reportedly faced setbacks, which he attributes to the PM's decisions. These remarks allude to statements by India's defense attache to Indonesia, which the Indian embassy later clarified as being misrepresented.

Prime Minister Modi's itinerary includes participation in the BRICS Summit in Brazil, while also fostering relations with nations in the Global South. This eight-day journey covers visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.

"When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going," Ramesh quipped, underscoring his notion that the PM is neglecting significant national matters.

Among unresolved issues, Ramesh called attention to the PM's lack of response to alleged defense revelations and ongoing claims by President Trump concerning diplomatic interventions between India and Pakistan. Moreover, claims related to unaddressed security challenges in Pahalgam have also been brought forward by Congress.

As per the itinerary shared by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Modi's international visit begins in Ghana from July 2 to 3. The subsequent stops include Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4), Argentina (July 4-5), followed by Brazil for the BRICS Summit (July 5-8), and concluding with a visit to Namibia.
