Cold wave grips Delhi-NCR: many trains cancelled, flights delayed

As the chilly fog grappled Delhi-NCR, the Indian Meteorological Department has forecast dense to very dense fog to continue till December 31.

Low visibility due to dense fog has hit the rail and flight services in and around Delhi.

IMD issued an advisory for the drivers to use fog lights owing to the low visibility. Also, travelers have been advised to stay updated on railway, airlines and transport service schedules.

As per reports, the Indian Railways has cancelled 11 trains and dozens of trains including Rajdhani Express on the Delhi-Howrah route, are running between 10 and 12 hours late.

Amid the cold wave, schools in Noida and Greater Noida will remain closed on Friday and Saturday.

Delhi police on December 28 already put a 'Red Alert' as the city was engulfed by the dense fog and low visibility and travelers have been advised to take following precautions:

  • Know your destination and set out the plan of your route. Keep the vehicle in good condition. Make sure everything is in working order, especially lights, brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, radiator, battery and car heating system.
  • In extremely dense fog where visibility is near zero, the best course of action is to first turn on your hazard lights, then simply pull into a safe location such as a parking lot of a local business and stop.
  • Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use your defroster and wipers to maximise your vision.
  • If visibility is reduced, turn on fog lights, reduce speed and slow down, watch speedometer, don’t drive beyond headlights.
  • Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use your defroster and wipers to maximise your vision.
  • Honk periodically to let other drivers know your presence. Do not attempt to overtake other vehicles.
