Mortal Remains of First Officer Clive Kunder Arrive in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jun 19 (PTI) The mortal remains of First Officer Clive Kunder, co-pilot of the Air India flight that tragically crashed in Ahmedabad last week, were brought to his Mumbai residence on Thursday morning, according to officials.

The casket containing Kunder's remains arrived at Mumbai airport via a flight, and his family members transported it to his residence on Ram Mandir Road in Goregaon (West), an official reported. Kunder resided with his elderly parents and younger sister in Mumbai.

The mortal remains will be kept at Kunder's home until 1 pm for people to pay their respects, after which the final rites will be held at the Sewri Christian Cemetery, the official stated.

The London-bound Air India flight AI-171, which carried 242 passengers and crew members, crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one onboard perished, along with 29 individuals on the ground, when the aircraft collided with a medical complex.

The ill-fated flight was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal alongside First Officer Clive Kunder. While Captain Sabharwal had 8,200 hours of flying experience, Kunder had accumulated 1,100 hours, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in a previous statement.

The aircraft departed from Ahmedabad airport at 1:39 pm. Shortly after take-off, the pilot (Captain Sabharwal) issued a 'Mayday' distress call, indicating a full emergency, to the Air Traffic Control in Ahmedabad. Mere moments later, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a medical complex situated outside the airport premises.

The last rites of Captain Sabharwal, who resided in the Powai area of Mumbai, were performed on Tuesday.
