CIDCO Unveils Water Strategy to Meet Navi Mumbai's Future Demand

Thane, Jun 27 (PTI)—A new supply strategy has been announced to address the projected water demand for Navi Mumbai, which will reach 1,275 million litres per day (MLD) by 2050, according to an official from CIDCO.

The region is experiencing rapid growth spurred by the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport, the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), and various mass housing projects, said said Vijay Singhal, managing director of City and Industrial Development Corporation.

"By establishing a robust water supply network, we are not only meeting current demands but also constructing a resilient water infrastructure for the future," Singhal remarked.

A recent statement detailed plans including the proposed Balganga and Kondhane dams, in addition to existing resources like the Hetawane dam.

"Strategically positioned on the Ulhas River, the Kondhane dam is set to initially supply 250 MLD, with a future increase to 350 MLD. This will optimize the water supply for NAINA. Meanwhile, the Hetawane water supply augmentation scheme will secure water provision for CIDCO and the Panvel Municipal Corporation areas," it stated.

Significantly, in August 2020, the Maharashtra government approved an extra quota of 120 MLD, which raised CIDCO's current water allocation from the Hetawane dam to 270 MLD, as per the information in the release.
