NIA Chargesheets Jharkhand Maoist for Arms, Extortion Crimes

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): A CPI (Maoist) operative from Jharkhand has been chargesheeted by the NIA for alleged involvement in handling arms, levying extortion, and providing shelter to members of the banned terror group. The official statement revealed that Rajesh Deogam, hailing from West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, has been charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The supplementary chargesheet was submitted to a special NIA court in Ranchi in connection with a case initially registered by the local police. The case pertains to the discovery of significant amounts of cash and incriminating materials linked to a key CPI (Maoist) member, Misir Besra, in March 2024.

The NIA took over the investigation in July 2024 and uncovered that Deogam was actively involved in a criminal conspiracy orchestrated by the banned organization. This conspiracy aimed to commit terrorist acts, organize meetings, and extort funds from contractors and traders.

Information provided by Deogam led to the seizure of gelatine sticks, Rs 10.5 lakh in cash, a walkie-talkie, a Samsung tablet, a power bank, a radio set, levy-collection receipts, and other incriminating materials. These items were found buried in the forest area between Husipi and Rajabhasa villages.

Ongoing investigations against the other accused individuals continue.
