CBI Takes Over Investigation in Missing Kerala Man Case

CBI assumes investigation of a missing Kerala man, after Kerala High Court's directive. Jamsheer vanished in 2023, post a suspicious message about his arrest in Nepal. Family cites UAE exit records, suspects foul play, urging CBI's intervention amid jurisdictional issues.

CBI Takes Over Investigation in Missing Kerala Man Case

New Delhi, Jul 4 (PTI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed responsibility for the case of a 23-year-old Kerala resident who has been missing since 2023, according to official statements.

This development follows the Kerala High Court's directive, prompted by a plea from the missing man's father, urging a thorough investigation into his mysterious disappearance.

Jamsheer, a B.Sc. Electronics graduate, traveled to the UAE on November 13, 2022, seeking job opportunities.

His family reported that he maintained regular communication via phone calls and WhatsApp messages until March 29, 2023.

However, after April 4, 2023, all communication abruptly ceased, and his phone was subsequently found to be switched off.

A message followed two days later to his elder brother from Jamsheer’s number in Malayalam, but in English characters, stating that he had been arrested at Nepal airport with 1.5 kg of gold and would be granted bail soon.

The family discovered from UAE immigration records that Jamsheer had left the UAE on March 22, 2023, arriving at Hyderabad airport the following day.

In his plea, the father expressed concern over the prolonged disappearance of his son, noting that the Kerala police have yet to undertake a substantial investigation.

The family suspects foul play involving the messages and the potential unlawful detention of Jamsheer, noting their futile attempts to establish contact with Nepali authorities.

The father emphasized that an effective investigation is crucial as delays pose a significant risk to Jamsheer, urging the transfer of the investigation to the CBI, which has jurisdiction across states and international borders.

During the court proceedings, the public prosecutor revealed that Jamsheer’s last known phone location was in Howrah, Kolkata.

The prosecutor also acknowledged the jurisdictional limitations of the Kerala police, recommending the transfer of the matter to the CBI.

Taking into account the arguments presented, the high court has transferred the investigation to the CBI.
