Cataract Awareness Cyclothon: Raising Awareness in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A cataract awareness cyclothon was conducted in Jayanagar to emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment of cataracts, the primary cause of preventable blindness in India.

The event took place on June 26 as part of Cataract Awareness Month and was organized by Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital in collaboration with Sun Pharma.

More than 75 cyclists, including healthcare professionals and eye donors from Shraddha Eye Care—the non-profit branch of Nethradhama—joined the initiative, as highlighted in a press release.

The cyclothon was inaugurated by R K Gupta, Trustee of the Koshika Foundation, a charitable organization offering free eye check-ups, eye surgeries, and heart surgeries for individuals in need.

Dr Sri Ganesh, Chairman and Managing Director of Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, was present at the event.

The cyclists journeyed through significant areas in Jayanagar, raising awareness about eye health and the necessity of timely intervention.

According to the National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey (2015-19), cataracts contribute to over 66.2 per cent of blindness cases in India.

Even though effective surgical treatments exist, late diagnosis—frequently due to a lack of awareness—leads to irreversible vision loss, affecting elderly and rural populations particularly, as per the release.
