Union Cabinet Honors Resistance to Emergency, Upholds Democracy

New Delhi, Jun 25 (PTI) – The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened on Wednesday to pay homage to the many individuals who bravely resisted the Emergency period and to honor their sacrifices.

During the meeting, a solemn two-minute silence was observed to honor those whose democratic rights, guaranteed by the Constitution, were unjustly stripped away, leading to unimaginable suffering.

The resolution passed during the Cabinet meeting highlighted the resilient spirit of those who stood against the Emergency's oppressive measures. "The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resolved to commemorate and honor the sacrifices of countless individuals who valiantly resisted the Emergency and its attempt at subversion of the spirit of Indian Constitution, a subversion which began in 1974 with a heavy-handed attempt at crushing the Navnirman Andolan and Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan," the resolution stated.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a Cabinet briefing, emphasized, "The Union Cabinet paid tributes to their exemplary courage and valiant resistance to the Emergency's excesses."

The resolution also noted the significance of 2025, marking 50 years since 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' a critical period in India's history characterized by the undermining of the Constitution, federalism, and the suspension of fundamental rights, human liberty, and dignity.

Vaishnaw further reaffirmed, "The Union Cabinet reaffirmed that the people of India continue to repose unflinching faith in the Indian Constitution and the resilience of the country's democratic ethos."

He urged both young and old to draw inspiration from those who safeguarded democratic values, stating, "It is as important for the young as it is for the old to draw inspiration from those who resisted dictatorial tendencies and stood firm to defend our Constitution and its democratic fabric."

The resolution concluded with a commitment to uphold democratic principles, stating, "India, as the Mother of Democracy, stands as an example of preserving, protecting, and safeguarding constitutional values. Let us, as a nation, renew our resolve to uphold our Constitution and its democratic and federal spirit."
