Budget Session: Opposition MPs disrupt Parliament over Mahakumbh stampede

A political storm unfolded on the second day of the Budget Session in both the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament, as opposition MPs vocally protested against the government on various issues, including the Mahakumbh stampede incident.

Opposition members disrupted proceedings by continuously raising slogans, prompting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to rebuke them.

"People of India elected you as MPs not for breaking tables, for sloganeering and disturbing House proceedings, but to hold discussions," Birla said. He also questioned the opposition, asking, "Have the people of India elected you as MPs for sloganeering and disturbing House proceedings?"

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha also saw disruptions, with opposition MPs staging a walkout over the handling of the Mahakumbh stampede. The incident, which occurred during the second Shahi Snan on Mouni Amawasya, claimed at least 30 lives and left about 60 others injured. Opposition leaders criticized the government's response to the tragedy.

In the wake of the stampede, the government formed a three-member judicial commission to investigate the incident. The commission will look into the causes and circumstances surrounding the stampede and will make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. The report from the commission is expected within one month.

The Budget Session began on January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu's joint address to both Houses. The first part of the session will run until February 13, with the Houses reconvening on March 10 after a recess, before the session concludes on April 4.
