Brigadier Mohd Usman: The Lion of Naushera's Legacy Unveiled

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) — A forthcoming book detailing the life and legacy of Brigadier Mohd Usman, a valiant hero of the 1947-48 India-Pakistan war, is set for release on July 17, as announced by Bloomsbury India. This publication takes readers through the stirring journey of Brigadier Usman, who earned the nickname "The Lion of Naushera" for his leadership in the intense battle of Naushera, where he successfully thwarted Pakistani incursions. The book, authored by Ziya Us Salam and Anand Mishra, aims to honor the memory of Brigadier Usman, offering insight into his heroism and the broader narrative of India's unity across various faiths, castes, and regions during the country's struggle for independence and defense of its borders. Brigadier Usman played a pivotal role in reclaiming Jhangar and Naushera in Jammu and Kashmir during the conflict. Tragically, he sacrificed his life on July 3, 1948, just days before his 36th birthday. His final resting place is near the Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. In recognition of his bravery, Brigadier Usman was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra and was accorded a state funeral, with dignitaries such as Lord Mountbatten, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, and Sheikh Abdullah in attendance.
