Former CM Biren Singh Reflects on the 1975 Emergency in India

Imphal, Jun 25 (PTI) Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has described the Emergency of 1975 as one of the darkest periods in India's democratic journey. He urged citizens to resolve never to allow democracy to become a captive, labeling the emergency as a merciless onslaught on the constitution.

On the social media platform X, Singh stated, "Today, June 25th, marks 50 years since a grim moment in India's democratic chronicles, the 1975 Emergency imposed by the Congress government of the time. It was a relentless attack on our Constitution, civil liberties, press freedom, and the essence of democracy.

Censorship dominated the day, and fear pervaded the night." He continued, "The Emergency serves as a reminder that democracy is not merely a governmental structure but a revered duty. Let us pledge today never to allow democracy to be held captive. India shall never again succumb to tyranny."

The BJP Manipur unit, in a separate message, also commemorated the event, saying, "We salute every voice that stood up against the darkest chapter of Indian democracy and politics. Emergency 25 June, 1975."
