BBC documentary row: Supreme Court issues notice to Modi govt on pleas against ban on show on 2002 riots

The Supreme Court on 3 February 2023 heard petitions related to the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The court issued a notice to the Union government seeking a response within three weeks. The judges posted the matter for hearing in April.

The petitions have challenged a ban on the BBC documentary, after the government ordered blocking of links on YouTube and Twitter which shared the series.

A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Justice M M Sundresh issued notices to the government and others on the pleas filed by veteran journalist N Ram, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan. It also issued a notice on the plea filed by lawyer M L Sharma.

The apex court also directed the Centre to produce original records relating to take down order.
