Bangladeshi national arrested for stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan during robbery attempt

Mumbai police arrested Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, for stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan during an alleged robbery at his Bandra residence on January 16.

The attack occurred at Khan's Satguru Sharan building home in the early hours, leaving the 54-year-old actor with multiple stab wounds. He underwent a five-hour surgery at Lilavati Hospital and is currently recovering.

According to officials, Shehzad broke into Khan’s residence intending to steal. After the attack, he slept at a bus stop, changed his clothes, and traveled across Mumbai, eventually reaching Thane to avoid capture. However, his backpack, seen in CCTV footage, became a key clue in the investigation.

Using CCTV images, transaction records, and a mobile number obtained from a labour contractor Shehzad approached for work, the police tracked him down. Shehzad, who previously worked at a pub in Worli, had stayed unnoticed in the area before fleeing to Thane.

The accused was charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for robbery causing grievous hurt, housebreaking, and provisions of the Passport Act. The court has remanded him in five-day police custody, stating that an international conspiracy cannot be ruled out.

Mumbai police commended their extensive efforts in analyzing CCTV footage and other digital evidence to apprehend the suspect, despite his attempts to evade arrest.
