SC Seeks Gujarat Govt & ED's Response on Journalist's Bail in Money Laundering Case

The Supreme Court demands answers from Gujarat's government and ED on Mahesh Langa's bail plea in a money laundering probe linked to financial fraud. Previous bails hint at a complex case background, while allegations question his journalistic integrity.

SC Seeks Gujarat Govt & ED's Response on Journalist's Bail in Money Laundering Case

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI) — The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Gujarat government and the Enforcement Directorate regarding a bail request from journalist Mahesh Langa, who is involved in a money laundering case connected to an alleged financial fraud.

During the hearing, a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued notices on Langa’s appeal against the Gujarat High Court's decision to deny him bail. They posed a pointed query to senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was representing Langa, asking, "What kind of a journalist is he?"

The bench elaborated, "With due respect, there are some very genuine journalists. But there are also individuals who, riding a scooter, claim to be 'patrakar' (journalist), and the nature of their actual activities is well-known." Sibal countered, asserting that these are mere allegations.

Sibal further explained, "In one FIR, he gets anticipatory bail. Then a second FIR is lodged, and anticipatory bail is again granted. But now, he is indicted under a third FIR for income tax evasion. There are additional matters against him." He emphasized that there is more background context to the case.

The bench has requested responses from the pertinent authorities. Previously, on July 31, the Gujarat High Court had denied Langa’s bail application in the money laundering matter, reasoning that his release might prejudice the case of the prosecution.

On February 25, the Enforcement Directorate reported the arrest of Langa as part of a money laundering probe tied to alleged financial misconduct. Initially, he was detained in October 2024 on charges related to a GST fraud case.

The basis for the money laundering investigation against Langa lies in two FIRs filed by Ahmedabad Police, outlining accusations of fraud, criminal misappropriation, breach of trust, and cheating, which allegedly resulted in significant financial losses to several individuals.
