Union Minister Suresh Gopi's 'Vanara' Remark Faces Backlash

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 18 (PTI) — Union Minister Suresh Gopi’s recent "vanara" remark targeting critics who raised concerns about voter list manipulations has sparked significant backlash, notably from Kerala’s Education Minister, V Sivankutty, on Monday. Sivankutty, in a strongly-worded Facebook post, described the comments as "insulting, unfortunate, and undemocratic," emphasizing that such language is unbecoming of a public representative.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining transparency in the democratic process, Sivankutty pointed out that complaints regarding electoral rolls are essential. Ridiculing those who bring such issues to light, he warned, undermines public trust in democracy. He urged Gopi to withdraw his remarks and issue a public apology, insisting that those in high positions should adhere to respectful discourse. Even amidst political disagreements, he noted, personal insults should be avoided.

The controversy emerged a day after Suresh Gopi, addressing allegations from Congress and the Left parties regarding voter list manipulations, stated he need not respond as the Election Commission of India would address these concerns. In a provocative statement, he referred to those raising these allegations as "vanaras" (monkeys) and suggested they seek legal recourse if unsatisfied.

This characterization drew criticism from District Congress Committee (DCC) president Joseph Tajet, who condemned the remarks, noting that such language is not part of Congress's ethos. Tajet accused the union minister of attempting to deflect attention from his issues through such comments. In a sharp retort, Tajet speculated that Gopi might have been speaking about himself and stressed that Congress stands firm on its accusations.

Last week, Congress leveled fresh accusations against Gopi, claiming he submitted false declarations to secure inclusion in the voter list for the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency ahead of the 2024 general election. The party has also lodged a police complaint against the actor-turned-politician.
