B Sudarshan Reddy Emphasizes Reviving Democratic Values in VP Race

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) – B Sudarshan Reddy, the Opposition's nominee for the vice-presidential polls, emphasized on Thursday that the upcoming election transcends individual aspirations and focuses on reviving India's core democratic values. These values include parliamentary integrity, respect for dissent, and the autonomy and fairness of institutions. Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, committed to upholding the vice-presidential role with impartiality, dignity, and an unwavering dedication to dialogue and decorum, should he be elected. Speaking after filing his nomination, Reddy expressed humility and responsibility, pledging his commitment to the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

"I filed my nomination for the Vice President of India as the Opposition parties' joint candidate,Reddy stated. My experience in public service—as a judge, a student of law, and a devoted citizen—proves that India's real strength lies in the dignity of each individual, the safeguarding of constitutional morality, and the unity of our diverse nation. This election is not solely about one individual, Reddy elaborated. It is a confirmation of the vision of India held by the founders, where parliamentary integrity prevails, dissent is esteemed, and institutions maintain their independence to serve the populace fairly.

As the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Vice President holds the crucial task of upholding the highest standards of parliamentary democracy, Reddy explained. If chosen, he vowed to fulfill this role with fairness, grace, and a resolute adherence to conversation and decorum. Reddy conveyed his gratitude to the Opposition leaders for their confidence in him and acknowledged the countless citizens who inspire the ongoing fight for justice, equality, and unity. He expressed, "With faith in our Constitution and hope in our people, I embark on this journey. May our democratic spirit continue to guide us all."

Reddy filed his nomination papers for the vice-presidential election accompanied by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former AICC Chief Rahul Gandhi, and other prominent opposition leaders. The Electoral College for the vice-presidential elections comprises Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, with the latter's nominated members also eligible to vote. The effective strength stands at 781, with a majority mark of 391 required.

Reddy, notably the first Lokayukta of Goa, also serves on the Board of Trustees of the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre in Hyderabad. The decision to field Reddy as the Opposition's joint candidate transforms the vice-presidential race into a contest between Southern candidates. The Opposition aimed to nominate a non-political face for the nation's second-highest constitutional position.

The ruling NDA has selected Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, an experienced BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with RSS ties, as their candidate. Radhakrishnan filed his nomination the preceding day.
