Guwahati, June 23 (PTI): Two locations in Dhubri and Goalpara have been earmarked for the establishment of a 3,000-MW thermal power project, with plans to lay the foundation by November, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Chief Minister mentioned that the state government initially considered setting up the project in Kokrajhar to deliver enhanced benefits to the district but has since refrained due to criticism. Some claim the government is "attempting to take away tribal land."

"Our state is set to host a 3,000-MW thermal power project. It will involve an investment of Rs 40,000 crore, with the tender process beginning shortly," announced Sarma at a press briefing on Sunday.

He indicated that the government had proposed Kokrajhar for the project to leverage the investment for the district, potentially generating one lakh direct and indirect jobs.

"The upcoming Rs 26,000-crore semiconductor facility by the Tata Group in Jagiroad inspired us to seek similar endeavors for Kokrajhar," Sarma explained.

However, he added, "We are not proceeding with this location to avoid allegations of encroaching on tribal lands. There are concerns about the land being allegedly given to corporations."

Identified plots for the project now include those in Dhubri and Goalpara.

Sarma also noted that the "4,000-bigha land" previously considered in Kokrajhar is currently occupied by "only 80 families."

"While it may not be used for the power project, it seems unfair for so few people to possess such a vast area. A hospital or college could be established there," he concluded.
