Four Arrested in Connection with Tragic Kaliganj Bylpoll Blast

Kolkata, Jun 24 (PTI) Three more individuals have been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a girl during a bomb explosion amid an allegedly violent celebration of the Kaliganj bypoll results in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police reported on Tuesday. The total number of arrests related to the minor's death has now reached four, according to a senior officer. The 13-year-old student lost her life on Monday in Malandi village within the Barochandgar area of Nadia district. This occurred following the alleged hurling of bombs from a Trinamool Congress victory rally that took place even before the official announcement of the Kaliganj assembly bypoll results. "Initially, one person was arrested, and three more have now been apprehended regarding this case, the officer stated. All four suspects face charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, and culpable homicide. "The four individuals are considered primary suspects in the death of the girl in Kaliganj’s Malandi, Nadia district. We have gathered substantial evidence against them and are pursuing others involved," reported a senior officer of the Krishnanagar Police District. Police stated that Tamanna Khatun suffered splinter injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the nearest medical facility. "The girl's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. We are investigating the cause of the explosion," the police officer added. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed the police to enact stringent legal action against the culprits. Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed secured a landslide victory in the bypoll for the Kaliganj Assembly seat, defeating her closest BJP contender Ashish Ghosh by 50,049 votes. The by-election was necessitated by the sudden passing of incumbent TMC MLA and Alifa's father, Nasiruddin Ahamed, in February.
