Jain Seer Remembered for His Contributions to Indian Traditions, Cottage Industries, and National Unity

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday highlighted the invaluable role of India's saints in preserving the country’s culture, unity, and knowledge. Speaking at the ‘First Samadhi Mahotsav’ of Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Mahamuniraj in Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh, Shah praised the contributions of Jain Acharyas and Munis in fostering national unity and strengthening Indian traditions.

Shah remarked that after India's independence, as the nation and its governance began to be influenced by Western ideologies, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj remained steadfast in upholding India’s cultural and spiritual heritage. “He was the only saint who consistently protected India, Indianness, Indian culture, our religion, and our languages,” he stated.

Role of Saints in India’s Cultural and National Identity

Shah emphasized the deep-rooted traditions of India’s saints, who have historically played a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation’s culture. “During times of turmoil, saints have always stepped in to protect knowledge and uphold national consciousness through their spirit of devotion,” he added.

He described Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj as a ‘yugpurush’ (visionary) who ushered in a new era of thought and inspired generations to value indigenous industries and employment. He actively promoted cattle welfare (‘godhan’), the spinning wheel (‘charkha’), handloom, and local businesses—ideals that resonate strongly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to boost traditional industries.

Acharya Vidyasagar’s Legacy and Sallekhana
Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj passed away on February 18 last year at Chandragiri Teerth in Dongargarh after undertaking ‘sallekhana,’ a Jain religious practice of voluntary fasting unto death for spiritual purification. His unwavering commitment to India’s spiritual and cultural ethos continues to inspire many across the nation.

The Mahotsav in his memory served as a reminder of the enduring influence of saints in preserving India’s rich heritage and guiding future generations towards self-reliance and ethical living.
