TMC Names Alifa Ahmed as Candidate for Kaliganj Bypoll

Kolkata, May 27 (PTI) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has put forward Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late Nasiruddin Ahamed, as its candidate for the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll in West Bengal's Nadia district, scheduled for June 19, 2025.

Alifa Ahmed, aged 38, has been a Zilla Parishad member in Kaliganj and has gained experience in local politics. Often seen accompanying her father at various political events in the Nadia district, she has become a familiar figure among the locals.

The announcement was made via the party's post on X, stating, "AITC, under the inspiration and guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. @MamataOfficial, we are pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for June 19, 2025. Kaliganj candidate (is) Alifa Ahmed."

The by-election was called for due to Nasiruddin Ahamed's passing in February this year. Widely known as 'Lal da', Nasiruddin Ahamed was a seasoned TMC leader who had represented Kaliganj on multiple occasions in the West Bengal Assembly, winning in 2011 and 2021, with a gap in 2016. He passed away at the age of 70.

Senior TMC leader Jay Prakash Majumdar, while announcing the nomination at a press conference, emphasized, “Alifa has previously served as a district council member from a seat in Kaliganj. She is not new to politics. Under her father’s guidance, she has been involved in many local developmental works. The people of Kaliganj know her, love her, and are eagerly waiting for the polling day.”

He further noted that the nomination was made under the direct instruction of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, expressing confidence in Alifa’s capability to continue her father’s legacy.

“The Trinamool Congress is confident of securing a record victory margin again in the upcoming bypoll,” he affirmed.

In the 2021 assembly election, Nasiruddin Ahamed had won by a margin of nearly 47,000 votes.

The Kaliganj assembly constituency now has approximately 2.5 lakh registered voters, according to a recent update in the electoral rolls.

The seat is politically significant, and the ruling party is leaning on both the goodwill of the deceased leader and the fresh appeal of his daughter to maintain their hold on the constituency.

As of now, the opposition parties—BJP, Congress, and the Left Front—have yet to declare their candidates for the bypoll.
