Air India flight diversion due to lavatory issues: investigation insights

A Boeing 777-300ER jetliner, operating as Air India Flight AI-126, was compelled to return to Chicago on March 5 after experiencing a breakdown in the majority of its lavatories.

The incident, which occurred while the aircraft was flying over Greenland, affected the comforts of its 300 passengers.

Images accessed by NDTV provide evidence of the nature of the blockage. One photograph reveals a large cloth being extracted from a tube connected to the plane’s lavatory system.

Another image highlights the improper disposal of plastic waste flushed down a toilet. Additionally, two unrelated images from separate Air India flights over the last fortnight illustrate similar issues, with one showing a blanket and another an article of clothing obstructing plumbing tubes.

The flight, after five hours airborne, was forced to make a U-turn back to Chicago to address the extensive lavatory failure.

Air India confirmed, in an official statement, that upon arrival in Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked without issue and were provided with accommodations to alleviate their inconvenience.

This incident underscores the criticality of adhering to in-flight waste disposal rules and has sparked discussions on better passenger education and potential improvements in airplane lavatory systems to prevent such occurrences in the future.
