Air India Crash: DNA Tests Identify 190 Victims in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, Jun 18 (PTI) At least 190 victims from last week's Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad have been identified through DNA tests. So far, 159 bodies, including those of 32 foreign nationals, have been handed over to their families, officials reported on Wednesday. The London-bound Air India flight AI-171, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. Almost all individuals onboard perished, except for one survivor. Additionally, nearly 29 people on the ground were killed when the aircraft collided with a medical complex. Authorities are conducting DNA tests to identify the victims, as many bodies were either charred beyond recognition or severely damaged. "By Wednesday morning, 190 DNA samples had been matched, and 159 bodies have already been released to the families," said Dr. Rakesh Joshi, the Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, to reporters. The 159 victims whose remains have been given to their relatives include 127 Indians, four Portuguese nationals, 27 British nationals, and one Canadian, he stated. Among the bodies of the 127 Indians returned to their kin were four victims killed on the ground and 123 who were onboard the flight, added Joshi. Following the crash, 71 injured individuals were hospitalized. "Currently, only seven remain under treatment at the Civil Hospital, while 12 others are at private hospitals in Ahmedabad and Dahod.
