Actor, environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio hails Assam government's initiative to end rhino poaching

Hollywood actor Leonardo Di Caprio has hailed India's efforts to end poaching of endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros.

In a post on Instagram, the actor highlighted how the Indian state of Assam succesfully fulfilled its goal to stop poaching of one-horn rhinos.

He pointed to the Assam government's 2021 initiative to end poaching after the killing of around 190 animals for horns at Kaziranga National Park.

He further underlined that the target was achieved in 2022 when no rhinos were poached for the first time since 1977.

Highlighting figures from World Wide Fund for Nature, the actor noted that the world population of the rare rhino soared to around 3,700 from about 200 at the turn of the 20th century.

Kaziranga National Park is home to 2,200 Greater One-horned Rhinos, which is about two-thirds of the world's population, actor's post read.
